Calendar solution goes to beta!

Filed under: Calendar solutions — nancy @ 10:59 am

Check out

http://ncwu.sgtst.com/calendar

I’m willing to call this the calendar “solution”. [We’ve canceled the Ontero account and so needed something by Monday the 5th or needed to reprint the business cards that say we provide a “master calendar” for our member organizations’ events. :-) ]

If you use an iCal compliant client, subscribe to

http://ncwu.sgtst.com/calendars/NCWU.ics

Also available:

  • updates via RSS
  • permission to edit the calendar (if you have an iCal client that supports WebDAV).

Postings to members@ncwu.org should get migrated to the calendar.

Will move from beta to production in January as part of the migration to the new web site. We’ll hope to have more information on clients available at that time.

Technical details:
Server - PHP iCalendar
Clients (for updates) - Sunbird - v 0.3 (alpha); iCal

Please post comments on what requirements I missed or other notes. Thanks!

May have found the calendar solution

Venue, http://www.venuecom.com/Hosting/hosting_iCal.htm,
offers a WebDAV enabled calendar (iCal) account for $25/year. It appears to be based on PHP iCal, but may certainly be worth the cost — at least for the transition between RTPnet and any WordPress/Dreamhost based account.

Another calendar: ExtCalendar 2

Filed under: Calendar solutions, New technology — nancy @ 6:07 pm

Here’s another open source calendar: ExtCalendar 2. I tripped over it at the AAUW affinity partner web site demo. It looks as if the project is in transition.

[The demo is running on Mambo. That may be another technology to check out - open source CMS.]

Yet another calendar

While looking for a date-picker control, I found CalendarXP.net that has both a popup calendar (what I was looking for) and a flat calendar (which may be what we need).

Another calendar option

While looking up something else, I found iWebCal which appears to be a web utility to display a calendar file in a way that’s in iCal format.

WebCalendar

Filed under: Calendar solutions — nancy @ 2:36 pm

www.myden.org supports WebCalendar — but it doesn’t appear to allow for much context on the event — or a clickable link from the event details.

But I may be wrong. I think this is the address of the application itself:

www.k5n.us/webcalendar.php

They also list their competitors at

http://www.k5n.us/webcalendar.php?topic=Competitors

Any likely candidates, Manon?

What does RTPnet recommend?

Filed under: Calendar solutions — nancy @ 7:25 pm

RTPnet recommends

  • Calendars.Net- aside from aesthetic concerns, on all my tests it has crashed in one way or another; hosted, it appears
  • Flat Calendar - this needs to get downloaded and installed. It’s “see it in action” link wasn’t working when I tried it just now.

What’s needed in a Calendar?

Here are a few thoughts on what NCWU needs in a calendar.
