Testing an audio file

Here’s a link to an audio file -
Testing MP3 uploads

In case you’re wondering, I recorded that with an Olympus DS-2. That’s got a USB interface to upload the WMA file it creates, and comes with a simple editing package. I converted the .wma to an MP3 with Audio Converter/Audio grabber, www.e-soft.co.uk free download (so it cuts off after 75% of the file). Will probably pay the $24.95 to get the full package - if anyone has other recommendations, let me know.

  1. I had trouble with the MP3 on another site (it crashed Firefox) so I installed the Firefox extension PagePlayList to handle the MP3. It’s possible that using and ENCODE tag rather than an ANCHOR tag would help, but for now this seems to be okay.

IE brings up an external player when I click on the link - seems much slower.

  2. When I use the Olympus DS-2 I download and convert the file with the software that came with it. You can convert the WMA file to a AIFF file (on the mac) and (I guess) a WAV file on the pc upon download. Then you can use iTunes (free on the mac and pc) to convert the AIFF or WAV to a MP3. For voice I recommend 64 kpbs bit rate for the mp3. Check out my blog post for more info on the Olympus DS-2. Thanks for linking to me. I’m glad ya’ll are blogging and podcasting!

  3. Thanks, Brian!

Don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but after checking the “convert to WAV” box in the software that came with the DS-2, the files still download as WMA files. I’ve got a solution for a convention this weekend, though. Will look at this again in a couple of weeks.
